5th Congress of the Lebanese Order of Physicians

AUTORE

(17/6/2010)

On February 27 and 28, 2009, the Fifth Congress of the Lebanese Order of Physicians - Tripoli entitled “Blood Disorders in Daily Practice was held under the Patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Public Health, Dr Mohammad Jawad Khalife. This congress has been a tradition over the years aimed at maintaining the highest standards of medical education and health care delivery in Lebanon and the region.

The scientific program covered state-of-the-art updates, evidence based guidelines, and advances in diagnostic and treatment modalities for a wide variety of blood diseases encountered in daily practice. Ten educational sessions focused on transfusion, thrombosis, hemostasis, cytopenias, leukemias, lymphomas, novel targeted therapies and immune deficiencies. A group of international, regional and local experts addressed these key topics from the bench to the bedside, from birth to old age, across all specialties and in different disease populations. All presentations were tailored to target specialists and generalists of multiple disciplines, physicians in training and health related professionals with the single objective of delivering the cream of medicine to all and most importantly to patients.

A special session entitled “Impact of International Collaboration on Prognosis of Hematologic Disorders” as well as an Educational Session on “Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Adults - New Developments in Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment” both given by prof. Robin Foà further enriched the outstanding scientific program. Prof. Foà highlighted the favorable impact of ongoing collaborations between the Mediterranean Institute of Hematology (IME) and various countries in the world including the Middle East. He also tackled other possible outreach projects that EHA plans to initiate with the objective of disseminating science, building solid scientific partnerships, and promoting optimal health care delivery worldwide.

Libanon Health Minister

The scientific program finished with a public session entitled: "The Lebanese premarital health certificate-an urgent need for its modification". Religious, governmental, ethical and medical delegates as well as patients and families dwelled on the benefits and shortcomings of this important certificate. Suggested recommendations were laid down and will be sent to the respective governmental authorities for implementation. This key session targeted Lebanese public of all sectors specifically the Lebanese youth as well as patients affected with inherited hemoglobin disorders and their families.

This highly interactive congress was a forum for exchange of experience and expertise amongst delegates and speakers and has provided a unique opportunity for initiating mutual scientific collaboration amongst researchers and institutions. According to participants, the power of sharing embodied in this congress is expected to strengthen medical potentials and contribute to a more dignified and stringent health care delivery in Lebanon, the region and the world at large.

International speakers had the opportunity to experience the beauty, heritage and hospitality of this charming part of the world from where the alphabet emanated and where the cedars stand with pride and dignity enjoying their eternity and glory. They returned to their countries with joyful memories and new friends.
