Tutorial report

Prof. Roberto Foà

(26/7/2010)

ESH-EHA ANNUAL DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP OF HEMATOLOGICAL MALIGNANCIES: FOCUS ON LYMPHOID MALIGNANCIES

March 2-4, 2007, Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy

The fourth edition of the Tutorial on lymphoid malignancies took place at the Congress Center of the Catholic University in Rome on March 2-4, 2007. These courses have been carried out on an annual basis – focussing on alternative years on myeloid and lymphoid malignancies – in close collaboration with “La Sapienza” University of Rome, the European School of Hematology (ESH) and EHA. This year’s course has been accredited by ECAH (European Council for Accreditation in Hematology) and has the support of Madame Curies’ European funds, finalized to didactic projects; for Italian participants the course has been also accredited by the national ECM committee.

The faculty of this Tutorial, chaired by Gina Zini (Rome), Barbara Bain (London) and Robin Foà (Rome), included Emili Montserrat (Barcelona), Marie Christine Bene’ (Nancy), Anton Hagenbeck (Utrecht), Estella Matutes (London), Alberto Orfao (Salamanca) and Andreas Engert (Cologne). As for the previous editions, the course utilized a technological platform that allows interactivity of participants. Attendees work in groups of three/four at a dedicated computer with a personal password that enables access to the didactic material. Three educational proposals are offered by 9 European speakers selected on the basis of their specific expertise.
1. A traditional didactic activity based on lectures given by the speakers in nine different sessions.
2. A diagnostic and clinical work-up based on clinical cases presented according to a logic and progressive sequence, during which the participants interact actively with the speaker (nine different sessions).
3. The third activity is based on self-evaluation processes. Six sessions, each containing four clinical cases presented according to a standard format: introduction, six questions with five answers each and only one correct.

The topics covered were: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, villous lymphocytes lymphomas, GI lymphomas, high-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, multiple myeloma, viruses and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas and Hodgkin’s disease. Using their password and working in small groups, participants have the possibility of carrying out each test only once. At the end of the test, the platform automatically generates an assessment of the answers (right vs wrong) and participants can repeat the test to confront themselves with the correct answer. At the end of the self-evaluation tests, the faculty members discussed the cases proposed.

This year’s course had 89 participants from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czec Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Rumenia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, UK and US for a total of 25 different countries.

This didactic layout, that permits to involve participants beyond a mere individual assessment in a truly interactive participation in small working groups, has been met by tangible success documented by the degree of participation and by the continuous and active presence during the various activities. The active participation of the attendees to the discussion during the different sessions is a further demonstration of the success of a format that fulfils the requests of the utilizers.

The course ended, as in the previous editions, with a final interactive session on the overall statistical evaluation of the Tutorial. In addition, a novel voting system just produced was tested for the first time. This will enable to take the Tutorial to many more locations without needing to rely on sophisticated IT technologies, allowing more people to take advantage of this advanced and highly appreciated didactic platform.

II TUTORIAL DE NEOPLASIA MALIGNAS HEMATOLOGICAS

March 7-10, 2007, Atibaia-SP, Brazil

As a follow-up of the Tutorial organized in May 2006 near Rio de Janeiro on lymphoid malignancies, ESH in collaboration with the Brazilian School of Hematology held the II Tutorial focused on myeloid malignancies in Atipaia, near San Paolo. The chairman was Marco A. Zago (Ribeirão Preto) and the faculty included R. Foa’ and Gina Zini from Rome, Roberto P Falcao, Eduardo M Rego and Dimas Covas from Ribeirão Preto, Ricardo Pasquini from Curitiba, Irene L Metze from Campinas, Silvia Magalhães from Fortaleza, Nelson Spector from Rio de Janeiro, Henrique Bittencourt and Evandro Fagundes from Belo Horizonte, Valeria Buccheri, Maria L Chaufaille and Carlos S Chiattone from S. Paulo.
The topics covered were: diagnostic platform of hematological malignancies, myelodisplastic syndromes, chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic myeloid/myelodisplastic diseases, undifferentiated and biphenotypic leukemias, myeloid leukemias, eosinophilic leukemias, leukemia with recurrent cytogenetic translocation and therapy related leukemias.
There were 87 participants from all over Brazil and the registrations had to be limited.
As with last year’s edition, the Tutorial was met with great success and active participation. It is expected that these most successful events will continue in the forthcoming years.
